Possible causes and solutions
Assuming that you do not smell anything burning and no smoke is coming out of the Rainbow vacuum, then the most common cause is a faulty thermal fuse. Rainbow vacuums have a thermal Cut-Off switch in the motor.
It is soldered on the field covered with protective sleeve and strapped with a cable tie. Replacing it usually solves the problem, however, keep in mind that it just may be serving its purpose and saving the Rainbow vacuum field and armature from overheating because something else is wrong (excessive sparking between commutator and carbon motor brushes, problem in the fan system or insufficient motor cooling). So if Rainbow sounds different than it used to, there is something wrong with suction or you smell like something is burning – STOP. Replacing thermal switch would not help. Thermal Fuse can be purchased HERE (replacing requires fairly advanced skills). Rainbow D4 and SE models - you are very likely to damage MOTOR GASKET when trying to access the motor.
